Today's challenge was broad strokes but I took the opportunity to complete the challenge I missed early on and do my self portrait as well. This really was a challenge for me because A) portraits in general are really difficult, not to mention self portraits and B) I am what you might call someone who works "tight," meaning simply doing broad, impressionistic strokes is very unusual for me. I tend to hone in on and fuss over tiny details so knowing when to stop before I got too detailed was tough for me.
Also, I don't know why but whenever I do my self portrait I have a lot of trouble with proportions. I always tend to stretch out my face and put too much space between my nose and mouth. In fact there are a lot of things I would change if I really wanted to do a more accurate self portrait. Eh well... I guess that's why I'm not a portrait artist, nor an impressionist. Although it can be liberating sometimes to step out one's comfort zone of doing the same thing over and over again, I think I will stick to my usual techniques and subject matter.
